Hi!
just joined this forum because of a major problem I could not find any answer yet. This is urgent because I have to make a product-cataloge ready for the printer (he needs a PDF file) and the deadline comes closer.

the cataloge includes many technical drawings with fine black lines but also with gradient colors - that is why I decided to use pixel-images instead of vector and make them high res to avoid using antialiasing (because of the thin lines). Anyway, here is the problem:

When making a PDF some of the high res TIFs (1200 dpi, CMYK) do not show up right (there are split vertically and only the right half is shown, stretched to the full width). I found out that this is not a matter of the distiller-options because it occours in the PS-file already. So it might be a problem of PM7. And it also occours only with the big pictures spreading from one side of the page to the other. Small ones are alright, big ones with lower resulution (600 dpi or 300 dpi) don't make any trouble either.

Maybe someone can give me a hint. I`m sitting on the window-sill ready to jump (it's in the first floor, though)

hoping: hoodoo23

PS: I use Pagemaker 7.0, Acrobat 6, OS Win 2000

Hi, hoodoo23,

If you're convinced that the problem occurs when creating the PS file from PM, that I can only suggest you check your print menu settings.

The usual areas to investigate are the PPD and TIFF/Images settings.

Which PPD are you using? I've found the "Acrobat Distiller 3011.104" (Adist5.ppd) to be better than the "Adobe PDF 3015.102" (ADPDF6.PPD).

"Send Imaga Data" in the TIFF/Images section should be set to Normal, not subsampled.

If these suggestions prove useless or you've already tried them, then post in which is more active than here.

It may also be a matter of how those images were placed in PM. Did you use File>PLace and NOT copy/paste or insert/object? These latter two methods of placing graphics in a PM file can play havoc when creating the postscript (esp the OLE method).

Thanks John.
I had TIFF/Images settings switched to "normal" already. But due to your suggestions I played around with the other two options as well. only "low resolution" does not cut my tiff in two halfs (but it is too low res, of course). So maybe it is some virtual working space problem. It is only the huge ones that get cut in two.
About the PPD: I am using the 3011.104 (distiller5) that came with the PM-upgrade CD, version 7.0. I have different 3011.104-PPDs though, they are marked with CS, CT, J or K (no idea what that means and wich one is the best choice). I am going to change to Acrobat 6 pro as soon as I get some installation problems fixed (but thats another story). Did I get you right you stick to the version 5 PPD although you have the distiller 6 already?

Thanks Eggles.
No, I do not copy/paste my images unless the file is only used as a scribble. They are all inserted via "Place" and there is no scaling done in PM (its all 100% x 100%).

Hi, hoodoo23,

Have you tried experimenting with the giant image, like creating the PDF with it on a single page, to see if the image is OK?

> CS, CT, J or K (no idea what that means

Chinese Simplified, Chinese Traditional, Japanese and Korean. For use with oriental version of PM and Windows which use double byte fonts. You can safely delete them.

Yes, I've found it works better - it may just my set up or something, but after a series of errors using ADPDF6.PPD I found they all disappeared with Adist5.PPD.
