I'm posting this question for a friend of mine who's been stuck in a very unappealing situation for quite a while now. Forced to use dial up due to where he lives, he used to have acceptable ping (=<300) in online games such as Quake 3. Nowadays however, on every server he joins he lags out and freezes. He just upgraded his computer to 1.5ghz and is finally able to play the games he's been drooling over for quite sometime, but now playing online has become impossible. To date he's tried buying a brand new external modem, changing operating systems (Win98, 2000, XP), different ISPs, and playing around with the settings on each of his modems. And yet, virtually every server he joins gives him 999 ping. Other tasks, such as downloading, go extremely fast (as far as 56k is concerned) and he has no other problems...only when it comes to online gaming. If anyone can offer up any advice, please send it along.
