I've done some googling and can't seem to find any good results on this, so I figured I'd ask here. Don't flame me too hard for asking this :(

Anyway, what is the purpose of a hierarchy as far as CR is concerned? Where would I use such a thing? Any performance concerns associated with it?

thx in advance!

Any time a table has a recursive relationship to itself.

Product and organizational hierarchies are good examples.

Crystal has online help on this.

i figured as much, but I couldn't find them in my searching on businessobjects.com either. I would appreciate it if you could point in the right direction to finding such a resource

I'm referring to the online help that comes with Crystal. Just hit F1...

that's too simple, ido! I expect that it must be some deep dark hidden secret that requires Lorentz transformations and 5th order differential equations to even begin to solve!

thx, though...

Cr works best with relational data which has it's own rules. However some data is hierarchical. The most common examples of this are organistation charts, bill of materials and general ledger.

A hierarchy occurs when a field in one record points to the key field of another record in the same table. Eg. A GL account record has a parent account (which is another GL record). Hierarchies are interesting in that they can be of varying numbers of levels.

In CR you have to group by the key field of the table, then select the Hierarchical grouping option, and identify the field in the table that has the parent value.

CR8.0 has hierarchical groups, CR8.5 included summaries across the hierarchy and CR XI then nested the hierachy and enabled conditional horizontal position and hierarchy level.

Do you think this should be in FAQ?
