I'm working with CR10.

I've got a crosstab that has only one field that it summaries. What I needed to do was sort the rows in a certain way.

I did a search on tek-tips and came up with a whole bunch of references to custom sorting in a crosstab. The problem is that for whatever reason that option does not appear for me in the crosstab's Group Sort Expert dialog box. The solution I came up with was to add another field for crosstab to summaries and then sort by that field's values.

My only problem now is that even when I supress the new field, no matter what I resize (row heading height or field heights) there is either too much space in the cell, or the visible field is too small because space is reserved for the suppressed field. Does anyone have any ideas on what I can do to keep my visible field and cell properly sized?

Thank you all in advance.

While in preview mode, you could select the summary you are using for sorting and then use the A icon to reduce the font to 1 pt. You can then minimize the height of that field. It won't totally eliminate the space, but will come close.

I'm curious what kind of sort you were trying to do initially that couldn't be solved by using specified order on column or row fields or topN for a summary field. There might be another way of addressing the original issue if you explain.

Thanks for the reply, LB, I'll try minimizing the font.

To answer your question, I was originally not using a sort at all and the records were simply sorted by the name of the series. When push came to shove and the boss said sort them in a certain way, I tried searching and found specified order. However, probably because I'm dumb, I couldn't find the specified order in the combo box within the crosstab group sort. Perhaps I'm doing something wrong. But at least this way I get to specify exactly what order will be since the report template will be used for different reports with minor adjustments in SeriesName, SeriesIndex formulas as well as the Command itself.

Thanks again.

To sort rows or columns based on the fields that comprise them, you can highlight the row or column within the crosstab expert->group options->specified order. To sort using topN based on the summary field, you would click on the upper left corner of the crosstab->report->topN/group sort.
