Hi,

My hidden files under windows XP Home Edition SP2 won't show up even after I choose "Show hidden files and folders" under the Tools/Folder Options.

This happened after I got a virus that stopped me from accessing my drives. Each time I double clicked the hard drive, or USB drive, a dialog windows would pop up asking me to select a program to open it.

I managed it get rid of the rid of the virus, but now my hidden files won't show up.

I very much appreciate every input.

Thank.

Possible that your windows registration got scrambled a bit, through the virus...

this is what I would do in your case:

1. DL and run AVG AntiMalware, once known as Ewido.

2. do an Online Scan, such as TrendMicro HouseCall.

3. DL and run SpyBot S&D.

4. DL and run HiJackThis! and paste the LOG here, so that we may be able to get rid off all nasties you may have...

5. after having done the above, and I am certain that my OS is clean, I then would reinstall XP over itself, just to make sure that the registry (pertaining to the OS is fairly reset)... the only thing I would loose is all those nice Hotfixes and updates, but not my data...

Perform a Repair Installation

How to perform an in-place upgrade (reinstallation) of Windows XP

If you double click a drive try selecting explorer.exe and see if that helps.
Check your folder is set to Open or Explore > Tools - Folder Options - File Types
