HIdden dialogue in pic. files

While opening a pic file in notepad - I noticed what seems to be personal messages that are scrambled. This also occurs with .dat, .msg files as well as other files-most often this hidden dialogue seems to be repeating itself. The content seems to be personal conversations(from my own household).
Is this really information sent 'to and from' my computer. How would I go about extracting and viewing the original message?

What directory of your computer are you finding these pictures? They could just be email messages with picture attachments that you think are pictures.
