Hi. Recently I've been getting an error when trying to hibernate Windows 2000 Professional with SP1 installed. The error is "The device driver for the 'generic volume' device is preventing the machine from entering hibernation. Please close all applications and try again. If the problem persists, you may need to update this driver."

Does anyone have a suggestion of how I might fix this error? I'm stumped.

Thank you.

What type of computer is it...laptop or desktop?

If laptop, is it docked?

Typically, you would not need nor should you attempt to hibernate while docked or dock a unit in hibernation mode.
The fact that hibernation is a method of saving the configuration and contents of Ram to hard drive is very complex and if attempting to return from hibernation in a different configuration problems will more than likely occur.

Your error in particular sounds like the hard drive for the "Generic Volume" is preventing you from entering hibernation. I have seen similar errors when trying to eject a hard drive or CD-Rom drive...it basically means something is using it or has not completely released it.
