Hi there!

What is the best way to identify and report on changes to the tasks contained in four separate MS Project 98 files? I need to be able to do this so that upper management can trap those changes which affect project timelines.

My current thinking is using MS Access to take a weekly snapshot of the data and then comparing the dates of tasks.

Any other ideas? I have heard that there is a function within MS Project 2000 which can already do this...?

All suggestions welcome and I would be happy to give MS Access advice in exchange!

MS Project (not just 2000 but previous versions) allow you to save a snapshot of a project. As you know, project plan development works best when it is an iterative process. However, once you achieve a plan at the outset that everyone believes in, you should "baseline" the plan by saving a copy. Once that is done, you can save subsequent versions up to a limit of 10 (I think). Go into MS Project and look up the help on "Baseline". It provides a pretty good explanation. There are a number of reporting techniques to obtain the differences between current plan and a baseline. Remember too that you can overwrite a baseline plan if you wish but you will lose the previous baseline. To get around that, you can save a current plan (MPP file) under another name and date stamp in the file name. In this way, you can have many baselines to use for reference.

Hope that helps.
