A good starting point if you able is to do a beginners course offered by a number of training companies. Failing that a good book. The Cisco Academy books are pretty good for beginners. Above all try to get "hands on practice" ideally with real router hardware but failing that a good simulator. The Sybex Etrainer is a fairly good one but there are many others.
Joining a forum like this is also a good move as people generally are willing to offer support and advice if you are having problems.

A lot of cisco reference material is fairly dry and hard work to read. Routergod do "celebrity guest spots" on a particular technology. EG. Alicia Silverstone explains ISDN routing. Its very "tongue in cheek" but the pictus of AS certainly make it a bit more interesting!!
