hi. our network has a WinNT PDC and I have a machine with windows NT Server and i dual boot it windows 2000 Server. i never encountered any problems when I use NT. however, i receive this logon message every time i try to use windows 2000:

The system cannot log you on to this domain because the system's machine account in its primary domain is missing or the password on that account is incorrect.

I can access the network resources like printers, etc., but the PDC cannot see me. I tried adding my machine to the PDC but it always gives me an error that the machine is already a member of the domain. Also, i cannot connect to the internet using Win2K. I never had this problem when using NT. What am I missing here?

Please help.

Thanks!

Hi,
remove your 2k Server from the Domain and join a workgroup then make a reboot. Delete the computer account from the domain and join the 2k Server to the domain. Wait a moment to let the replication occur or start the replication manually. The reboot your server and your computer account should be ok.
And use different computernames for your nt and 2k server or you have the same trouble with your nt server after this action.

The problem is, as JensP pointed out, mainly because you have 2 different servers using the same name. Remember that according to the database 1 server is NT4, the other is Win2K - even though the MAC and IP addresses may be the same. The database NT uses cares only about the SID.

Use different names, re-join the domain and it should be OK. Cheers,
Sam

Hi JensP & OzDog!

Thanks for the support. but i still have a question: How can I delete the 2k server in our domain if, in the first place, i cannot add it? It is my NT that is the member of the domain. Remember that I have a dual boot system with NT and 2K so renaming the server is not an option 'cause i'll be transfering the problem form 2k to NT. How can i make the domain see me regardless of which OS I am logged on to? I'm sure i'm missing something here. thanks again

:)

In that case, i think you should start your computer in Win2k server, and rename it. Then add this name to the domain. You will two names for the same computer--one while running NT, and the other while running win2k server.
Dont know if it helps.....
