Hi,

I'm new to HTML and JavaScripting, but know some MS VB for applications from several years ago (new here also (just found last night)). :)

My main question is how to read the user.dat file and grab a short string after 'Screen Name' into a variable to use for lookup purposes in a HTML table.

The table that has the department empoyee 'name - email - and AIM screen name'. Clicking on the screen name opens the IM window to that individual. I can add a greeting automatically to the message, but I want that greeting to have info based on the current AIM user (ie. actual name (AIM names can be so cryptic) and extension etc.) which is stored in the USER.DAT file.

Can anyone show me the easiest way to get the string after 'Screen Name' which is located in user.dat and changes whenever the user changes, and put it into a variable.

Thank you.

You can't open the registry or users files with a web browser. The only locally stored files you can open in a web browser are files called "cookies". Look into using cookies and see if this can help you. You're only as good as your last answer!

Thank you Klae,

I found this forum a couple days ago, did some extensive searching here, and it was becoming apparent that the process would require Perl or something similar (which I've installed (I hope I'm understanding correctly)).

Thank you for the confirmation. I am looking into cookies at this point for a 'less than I wanted' temporary work-around. "Uh, honey, a P5 with a 20" monitor is perfect for email"

Another thought...

Are you programming an intranet?
It looks like you are... You might be able to get signed/unsigned vbscripts, javascripts, activeX objects or java applets to work and access things locally if you persuade the Intranet administrators to lax the security on the "INTRANET ZONE" You're only as good as your last answer!
