Hi,
Iam new to Tera data. I have good experience with SQLServer and ORacle servers. Can any body guide me where Can I find the concepts of Teradata and tutorials? Is it a separate database server from other database servers(ORacle etc).

Thanks in advance
Srini

Hi,
Yes Teradata is a Different Database Server from the from others like Oracle.

However the Server uses the same industry standard connection protocols

JDBC
ODBC
Perl DBI/DBD

that other servers use so once you have configured your tools to talk to the Teradata Server and you have populated your Database tables your tools won't care whose server it is.

We also have our own proprietary Call level interface (CLI) for coding from high level languages.

I would suggest ordering a Free Teradata Demo CD from

this CD comes with a full set of manuals, examples, client utilities and of course a fully functional version of teradata for Windows 2000. ( there is also a patch you can down load if you want to run it on XP ). Only limitation is this is for personal use and to a 1 Gig of database space max.

This CD is totally Free ( save giving NCR some personal data like where to mail it to you. see the privacy notice on the page. )

If you can't wait for the CD you can download all the manuals from

click on
client for the tools,
Database for the server and SQL reference manuals
Warehouse suite for Data Mining and metadata services.

If you have any other question feel free to post them here and we will try to answer them to the best of abilities.

Hi,
Thanks for your reply with good info and advises. I ordered for the cd. Mean while I just want to know some details like--

1. Why should we go for Teradata when you are using Oracle say ver 11 etc.. as it supports Datawarehousing also.
2. Some differences between Teradata and other servers.
3. Some useful links.

Thanks again
Srini

Answers to your questions
1.Teradata is about doing Data Warehousing - Oracle is about talking about it.
If your company subscribes to Gartner, then see about they say.
2. Scalable, performance, flexibility, (almost) zero DBA intervention.
Again. For Oracle is OK for small Data Warehouses, but if you want to play with the grown-ups, then it's Teradata.
3. or

Hi,
It depends on what you are trying to do with your DW. you can go to.....

and you will see that NCR (Teradata) hold 4 of the top 5 Decision Support largest sites. Now this is for a single Database within a warehouse. Most DW contain multiple databases.

You can join your 'regional' Teradata users group

---------------------------------------

you can go to

and view articles and white papers about teradata and our customers. There even Analyst reports. My favorite although it is almost a year old is.

In Search of Oracle Terabyte Data Warehouses

Teradata has over 200 customers which are beyond the Terabyte. WE have several which are beyond 100 Terabytes. Been there done that.

---------------------------------------

If you want to contact them and see how they like Teradata contact your account team. They will put you in touch with other Teradata customers. People you can talk to one on one. Call them and ask them your questions.

Ask your Oracle account team for the phone numbers of other oracle customers that you can call. Then call those people and ask them the same questions.

---------------------------------------

Register and come to the NCR Partners users group meeting in Las Vegas Sept 29 - Oct 4. Again talk to real Teradata customers, and developers like myself.

Thanks for so many good advises and suggestions.
I will go though the listed ones.
I will present any of my doubts..
I hope I will get again good response from all of you..
