Hi,

I would like to integrate a linux printing server in a windows NT environment. About 150 Pc with windows NT is connected to the network.

What kink of server is to be used (memory, processor etc) ? For the local installation of the printers does it work like Windows NT. I've heard that when we want to install a printer in a workstation we must have administrator rights, is it right, what is the tip if so ?

Thanks for your help

Hello,

I think you will need a fast computer if you want that your
linux server still more that a printer server.
If is not more that a Linux Printer I think that any
PC computer should do their job...
I suggest you a minimal of 230 Mhz Processor, with 2GB of space, and 64 MB of RAM, if just for printing.
If you want more that a printing server than you can choose
for a 1.4 Gz Processor, 40 Gb Disk Space and 512 RAM, I
think this should do their job, because is a fast computer,
and you can save files on it, printing, and other things
you can imagine. This is a normal PC.
More powerfull is just a real SERVER;) that have two
processors or more, etc... etc...
For printer instalation you will need linux driver for that
printer. In Linux Suse you can install your printer from
a program called Yast.
You can login in your Linux Server with user as "root".
In Linux "root" is called administrator. He can do all
in Linux is the master;)

I expect that I help you;)
Sorry about my english;)

Actually, what I want to do is to install network printers in this linux server and then to share them with NT workstations. Could a user install himself a network printer which is shared in Linux server with his NT rights ?

Sorry for my english too.

you want to share a printer on your linux machine? All workstations use windows?

there´s a "program" called Samba which makes a linux computer look and behave lika a Microsoft product. You can share directories and printers with the permissions you like. I believe that if you configure your linux machine to behave like a NT server, all permissions users have will work on the linux machine as well.
The right to map networked printers is enabled by default in NT. I think it´s the same with samba.

Samba is often included in linux distributions.
Run a "find . -name smdb" to see if you have installed the samba packages.

I´ve worked very little with samba, so this is qualified guesses only. Hope it helps anyway. /Sören

I already knew Samba but I never tried to use it with shared printer. Your remarks are judicious and logical.

I'm gonna try

Thanks
