Hi,
I have sendmail installed but not configured yet. I have seen on several post here that webmin makes life a little easier for a newbie to configure sendmail. I have two domains that I would like to receive mail at sales@domainone.net and sales@domaintwo.net

I'm confused a little on what else needs to be set-up for me to get mail from my windows pc from remote location using outlook. Will webmin set-up everything required or will I still have to edit other files. I have not used mail server before. Is imap installed along with sendmail? Is pop3 part of sendmail? Do I need procmail?

Thanks

I'm fairly new to sendmail too but I will give you the info that I know.

You will need to install the imap rpm. When you install it, pop3 will be installed as well. If you have Red Hat 7.1 or 7.2, you will need to enable them (pop3 and imap) in your /etc/xinetd.d folder (just change the "disable = yes" to "disable = no".

Procmail, I believe, is a mailer that you can use for the local mailer. In my test network, I use it as a spam filter.

Webmin does make it a lot easier to administer for newbies.

Hi,
Thanks for the info. I installed imap and enabled files as per your help tip above. I also installed webmin. I went through the webmin sendmail config. I think I entered the info where I needed to. It seemed to be to easy I must be missing something or webmin handles it all.

I need to fix my dns zone file now. I'm setting up the mail server on a different pc with it's own ip. I'm off to figure this out now. I think I just need to add 2 lines.
mail IN A 212.216.238.XXX
IN MX 5 mail.domainone.net

mail is the hostname of my new server.
Does this seem right to you-That is if you are running your own dns.

Thanks for help

Hi,

The mail-exchanger line would look more like :

MX 10 mail.domainone.net.

(remember the final period if its fully qualified)

Once you've changed the zone just test with 'dig' :

dig @localhost domainone.net MX

(or leave out the @localhost for default DNS server or use another dns server if you have multiple NS, i.e. @servername or @ipaddress)

Remember sendmail is just a MTA (smtp server) and the win clients would definitely need you to have either the pop3 or imap daemons active to receive mail.

Hope this helps

Hi,

The second box I'm going to use for sendmail has hostname ns2.domainone.net and a different ip. So I need to edit zone file to point to slave box for mail. So does this seem right.

the usual////
IN NS ns1.domainone.net.
www IN A 207.xxx.68.66
ftp IN A 207.xxx.68.66
ns2.domainone.net. IN A 207.xxx.68.67
MX 10 ns2.domainone.net.

Thanks

Hello,

Using outlook2k I am able to recieve mail to mydomain. But when I send mail I get error 550 relaying denied. What file do I need to edit to allow me to sendmail from outlook.
I added my domain to relay file.

Thanks again.
