Hi..I have an HP Pavilion 8396 pc, with Intel Pentium 2 processor 450 MHz, and with Colossal 12G hard drive.
Now...I bought a new WD400BB-00DEA0 40 GB hard drive.
I tried to switch the jumpers in a couple of ways (but not all) and i connected it with the 40 pin connector which is
part of the connector connected to my original (i guess 9 pin) hard drive.
I rebooted my pc..[flush]...but i didn't find a new hard drive in My Computer (in Windows Xp professional).
Now I want to put this new hard drive as my main one...and keep the other old one as a back up...or somethin...
I'm not sure about(master, slave)and these stuff..(what's the difference anyways ??))
Should I change somethin in Bios ??? Should I install drive or somethin ??
Please tell me what's the best way to setup this new hardrive (as the main one),And specially how should I setup the JUMPERS!!

The new drive will probably have jumper settings actually printed on it. It should also have a leaflet with them on, and the Western Digital website (

will also have details. There may be an issue with your motherboard/bios recognising the 40GB drive (age of your machine - it may only recognise up to 32GB drives).

First try connecting just the new drive (ie, disconnect your current drive) with jumpers set as single (master) drive. Boot machine, and see if drive is detected - you will see on POST screen when machine boots. If its not detected, you could try to find a bios upgrade for your motherboard (if you know make & model of this, try manufacturer's site first) - its quite likely there is one which will allow 40GB drive to be recognised.

If it is detected - you'll just need to decide how you want to install it (eg, if you want to transfer current drive's contents so new one will run XP exactly as old, Western Digital's Data Lifeguard tool might be a good solution -

Thanks..wolluf....now i'm using the new drive.....as the master...& everything is running ok....
