Hi,

I have an AIX box (Ver 4.3) and a built in tape drive.
When ever a tape is inserted it gets ejected automatically before I issue any command.

Does any one know how to arrest this problem.

Thanks.

Is this a 20/40GB Mammoth tape drive ?

If so, have you recently put a regular old 8mm tape in it ?

If so, the drive firmware is coded so that if the tape drive senses an "old" format 8mm tape, the drive requires cleaning before any "newer" 20/40GB tapes can be used.

Another cause is if you put an "old" 8mm tape into the 20/40GB drive, and it is NOT write protected, it will spit it out. Try write-protecting the tape, then re-inserting.

check "smitty errpt" if your tape drive is not asking for cleaning

Thanks for all you help.

My tape drive uses 4mm 4GB tapes.

I used a cleaning tape, I used the tape write-protected and no success. It just spititing the tape out.

Any advice on this will be greatly appreciated

bommer,

Have you checked your error report?

If there are no errors you could try :

diag

advanced diags.

select : rmt0

I had a similar problem in the past when the load mechanism on the drive was failing to load the tape, so it was just spitting it out. It could also be that you are using the wrong type of tape, I assume that the front of your drive just says DDS2 ? If so you should be using standard DDS2 tapes, if the tape is DDS3 it will not work.

If not of the above has any effect then call out you hardware support people.

Best of luck.

I had the same problem and found out that it was DDS2 whereas I was using a DDS3 tape.

Thanks for all your help.

Silly me !! I was using DSS3 tape instead DSS2.
