Hi , how come my data in my exchang

Hi , how come my data in my exchange server couldn't be beacked when the exchange service is running. I have exchange agent and open file agent on my veritas 8.6. Is that normal ?
Please help.

They're in use. When you do an online backup, the information store, MTA, etc., are running and thus in use. If you want to back them up, you either need to do an offline backup (not recommended, as it's harder to restore and usually less up-to-date), or use a backup product that permits backup of open files. Most of the commercial backup products have an add-on module for open file backups.

Whoops, sorry, missed that you had the open file agent installed. It sounds like you need to properly configure the open file option.

Hi, is there any setting or configuration on the open file agent? i never come across any. To my knowledge, there isnt any. Anyone any comments on this ?

If you want to backup exchange you shouldn't use OFO.
You should backup exchange through the Exchange API, that is, select the "Exchange Information Store" not the files (*.EDB). For what I'm seeing you are backing up the file system. The *.edb files are useless (Unless you did a offline backup). Make sure you have you Exchange Agent well configured (MAPI Profile, permissions, etc...). BTW, the advantage that exchange agent brings to normal backup is brick level support wich in many cases people don't want. Check out

KristeK is right.

Selection tab:
Exclude dsadata, mdbdata & imcdata from the selection.
Add Exchange Information Store to the selection. (Only possible if exchange agent is installed.)

Exchange tab:
Select full backup, Flush loggs.

In exchange:
Make sure circular logging is OFF. (Properties on the server).

If you have the Exchange Agent in Veritas 8.6 you need to make sure the following is checked:

(1) Open up your BACKUP EXEC program
(2) Right click on your scheduled job and select (Edit Job)
(3) Click on the "Selections" tab
(4) Scroll to your server that has your Exchange Server
(5) You should see somewhere the following 3 selections:
(1) Microsoft Exchange Directory
(2) Microsoft Exchange Information Store
(3) Microsoft Exchange Mailboxes
(6) Select Options 1 and 2 and make sure they are checked.
This will backup your Exchange Directory and your
Information Store. The 3rd selection allows you to
make backups of individual mailboxes but you have to
do some steps to make this work. Too long to list
here. Would advise checking out the following articles

(7) The directories you listed as files being skipped are open files and cannot be backed up. These directories need to be excluded. As I mentioned in step 5 as long as you are backing up the Exchange Directory and Exchange Information Store you are all set. See the following article which lists your skipped errors and why you need to exclude these directories.
