If you are using Windows, you'll need to set up an ODBC data source that points to the file in question (Control Panel-Admin Tools-Data Sources(ODBC)). The driver required will be determined by the file - there's a Microsoft Text Driver and Microsoft Excel driver.
In impromptu, you can then create a new catalogue that points to this data source.
