iam new with exchange

1) what would be best place to set up a exchange server
server1 is a gc look.com
server2 is in a sub domain at.look.com

could i set up exchange on the sub domain because from what i heard you cant back up system state and the exchange server at the same time.

so would it be better to install exchange on the sub domain so i only need to back up exchange, then i could re install server2003 replicate ad from the gc server then run domainprep install exchange and then restore the exchange backup.

You can backup the system state and Exchange on the same server from the same backup job.

Where to install it is really based on needs and your AD infrastructure. If you need to have Exchange for your entire forest, why not put it in the forest root domain?

just thinking in keeping it as simple as possible didnt want the root server to be over worked, and just install sql on 1 member server and exchange on another.

have a question on my member i name it srv2 on my exchange server i named it exch1 but when i use the web access i have to type srv1\exch what i did i added an alias to my dns to use teh name exch1.
Just wounder how people get there exchange server to be called mail or is it when you first install server 2003 you name it mail and when you install exchange you also call it mail?
sorry iam new to all this and learning all the time.

If you want your Exchange server to be called Mail, then you should have named it mail when you built the box.

True. And, if you installed Exchange on your system drive, you're going to run into other problems as well. Including performance, drive space, etc.
