I trashing our Netware 5.1,I had it!!. I want go Linux route. Which Distro is good?, I hear Mandrake and Debian is super. I want to use as file server and a print server.
Any up and down?
That question is like 'what's the best car'... It's all personaly choice.
Personally, I would go with redhat or suse. Mandrake is aimed at a beginner desktop solution and Debian assumes you have experience with administering a linux box.
Hi there.
Apparently, you're having a problem with your NetWare box. If you post in the NetWare 5 forum, we may be able to help you resolve it.
At the risk of getting flamed here, I'd just encourage you to think about your business needs and the technology that you'll use to meet them.
While Linux is a great OS, it's not right answer for all business needs (no OS is right for every situation). Below are just a few examples of the strengths of NetWare. Please note that I am not attacking Linux; I love Linux too.
1) Directory Services. NDS/eDirectory is the leader, hands down. The beauty of eDirectory is that it's cross-platform (hell, you could even run it on your Linux box if you migrate it away from NetWare) and based upon open standards
2) File and print services. NetWare is still the fastest file/print server on the planet. Always has been. While Samba is great, the testing that I've done indicates that NetWare is substantially faster. With NetWare 6, no client is needed; clients can get to their files on the NetWare server using their native protocols (CIFS, Mac, NFS)
3) Enterprise support. While the Linux vendors and the open source community are great sources of support, I think it's more important to be able to get support from a respected, well-entrenched company.
Well, those are just a few thoughts.
