Hi Guys,

I need your help. I capture an ICMP packet. Do you know what are the things that I should look for in a ICMP packet filter when there is a network problem

Hi,

There are a lot of different ICMP types. Check the following link for a list:

Some are more usefull for troubleshooting ip problems then others. some messages that can point to a "problem" are:

- redirect for host (The host sending the original packet is pionted to antoher DFG)
- Host unreachable
- Port unreachable
- net unreachable

On the iana link you will see all the icmp messages and there corrosponding RFC wich will give you more detailed information about a specifoc message.
regards,
robert

Go by and read all the cool stuff there that Laura has published about ICMP. That is THE one protocol she hammers on in her classes over and over again.
