Hi Folks,

I have just downloaded and ran nmon7 fileset on F50 to see how much mem we are using and was amazed by the response, it is not the kind of output I had expected !

nmon v7a Hostname=blbf50 Refresh=2.0secs 14:14.59

I have asked our hardware agency for a quote for 513 mem chip, would that help to improve the performance (as it does seem sluggish at times but only during v busy hours). Would another 512 mb be optimical or should I add another paging space too on rootvg?

Thanking you all in advance.

Regards

K

It looks like more memory might help. Not so sure about paging space, though.

This is an Oracle database, right? My experience on sluggish performance of an Oracle database has always pointed to poorly laid out files (files not spread across disks and controllers properly). How are your files laid out? Are data and index on separate disks and controllers?

You also might go to the the IBM Redbooks page, search for tuning. You'll get a long list of books. The one you'll want is Database Performance Tuning on AIX. It has a good section on Oracle. Here's the link to Redbooks:

Hi Bi

Yes it is an oracle database, and I am in the progress of ordering a 1 gb memory plus new adapter for the server. The datafiles, index file and controllers are spreaded across three disks in the best way I can organised it. The problem is the company is v tight with budget and it is hard asking for more !

I had to show them the statistics of the nmon outputs to justify my point that we do need extra memory.

I will read the redbooks on performance issues.

Many thanks

Katherine

You also might want to run topas (which is in /usr/bin) to see how busy your disks are. I've done some tests and the effect of file layout on the disks is significant.

Hi Bi

It is rather odd I do not have topas on /usr/bin, and I did complete installation of AIX 4.3.3.

Is there an extra fileset I should install, if so does it come out of the same installation disks or from web?

Cheers

K

The fileset to install for 'topas' is:

bos.perf.tools
