this is on the crystal site article Id c2002466

I have not tried it.. but others here say its fine to use multiple versions, as long as you know the older DLL's maybe overwritten.

Running multiple versions of Crystal Reports on the same computer

The information in the article refers to:
Seagate Crystal Reports 8

Applies to:

All versions
Installation
Multiple versions of Crystal Reports

Synopsis

Is it possible to run multiple versions of Crystal Reports on the same computer?

For example, can you install and run Crystal Reports 8 from it's own folder on a computer which already has Crystal Reports 7 installed?

Solution

We do not recommend and do not support running multiple versions of Crystal Reports (CR) on the same computer with the same bit version.

Installing multiple versions of CR with the same bit version can cause one or both versions from functioning correctly. For example, the Seagate Chart/PG Editor program will not function correctly with both versions 5 and 6 (32-bit) or 5 and 7 (32-bit) on the same machine.

Crystal Reports also installs several files into the "system" folder (\Windows\System or \WinNT\System32). If multiple versions of CR are installed (with the same bit version), CR files from the latest installed version are present in this folder. However these files may not function correctly with older CR files located in an application directory where an older version of Crystal Reports is installed (i.e. C:\Crw7).

Here are some suggestions if multiple versions of Crystal Reports are required for use:

- Use separate computers per each version of Crystal Reports needed

- Use a computer which can multi-boot to separate hard-drive partitions. You can then install different versions of Crystal Reports to each separate operating system partition.

- Install 16-bit on machines with any other 32-bit version already installed.

- Install 32-bit on machines with any other 16-bit version already installed.

Note: Whether a RPT (report) file is 16-bit or 32-bit is highly dependent (but not completely dependent) on the bit version of the database. You cannot use CR 16-bit to connect to a 32-bit database.

If multiple versions of CR with the same bit version are already installed, it is highly recommended to:

1. Uninstall the higher version number.

2. Uninstall the lower version number(s). It is possible to use an uninstall batch file to remove versions earlier than 7. Refer to Knowledge Base article c2008547 "Uninstalling Crystal Reports 5, 6, or 7 using uninstall batch files" for more information.

3. Reinstall the desired version.

For example, if a single computer has both CR 6 32-bit and CR 7 32-bit, you will need to uninstall version 7 followed by version 6. You can then install the desired version.
