Hi All !

I want to do a file transfer.
I earlier did transfer from MAINFRAME(HOST) to PC and the trasfer is working fine.I was opening the downloaded file in which ever format i want mostly word or note pad.

However if i want to do the reverse from PC TO MAINFRAME i am getting junk on the host.The file i am trying to upload two files to mainframe (a) A word document (b)Excel spread sheet with 3 columns.

How to do this transfer and get the data in the correct format as it was in the file being uploaded.What options should i use? The fallowing are the options available

DATA TYPE :
option to choose either

BINARY
TEXT
COMPRESS

Under text there are options to choose

CR/LF
To EBCDIC
Append

RECORD FORMAT :

Options to choose

Fixed
variable
undefined
default

Also options to specify

Record length
Block size

SPACE :

tracks
cylinders
default
average blocks

FILE TRANSFER COMMAND :

TSO Trasfer program
Additional TSO parameters

WHICH OF THESE OPTIONS SHOULD I USE WHEN I UPLOAD

(A)WORD DOCUMENT
(B)EXCEL SPREAD SHEET

Your mainframe cannot understand a file like a Word or Excel Document due to the embedded control sequences used by these applications. You will need to use the export option under Word or Excel to transform these files to pure ASCII data. Then the files will resemble the type of files you brought down from the mainframe. You will have to experiment with upload options since I am not familiar with your mainframe operating system.

it depends on what you want. Do you want to use the data on the mainframe then you first save as a text file or PRN or something like that what is also very good readable using the notebook on your pc or an old program like editor.

Than you do an upload with translate to EBCDIC, variable length records. The other variables are less important. You can choose just something.

If you want the mainframe to store the file just for backup, you don't translate from ASCII to EBCDIC and you use the undefined format.
