Heya Guys,

First and above all, I'm not a technician. Just learned to tackle a lot of problems in the last 20 yrs of computer-usage.
Now I'm stuck and I need to learn a bit more it seems. *grins

My problem is typed as: Motherboard or Graphic Card failure by Acer: Some kind of hardware conflict by AMD Customer Service Tech Support
For myself I think there is a memory issue due to bad internal communications with either memory or harddisk.

Machine:
Notebook: Acer 7551G
AMD Quadcore Phenom II 950 2.1ghz
AMD Radeon HD6550M - driver AMD Radeon 6600M and 6700M Series, version 8.982.0.0 -
Windows 7 64bit Ultima
DirectX11
Realtek Audio version 6.0.1.6029
Powersupply adapter in socket not internal battery usage at any time.

ok time for the wall of text. Sorry guys, stay with me plse.

Historie:
Laptop bought about 1 year ago by my son. According to his statings:
Functioned for about 2 months, then crashes, bsod's etc. Conclusion Acer tech support: fried harddrive. Est. rep.time Acer 4 weeks. Est. rep. time local shop 24 hrs. Local shop places new hd. Laptop worked fine. (Never separate a gamer from his machine long eh *grins)
After about 4 months, bsod's crashes. Couldn't resolve it and he bought a new asus laptop in august 12, this one wend to me in the expectation that my older games would work fine as where he is ighend mmorpg like guildwars, wow, and games like skyrim the elder scrolls also the machine I was on, was on his last legs.

August 2012
Immediate problems with Settlers VII, constant bsod's, crashes. Occassional in Anno1404 and problems running large spreadsheets which result in freezeups and crashing of Excell.
On the other hand, game like Sims2 with all expansions works effortlessly without any problems of any sort.
Started dialog with ubisoft: They pointed towards an outdated Radeon driver and suggested an update.
Acer had no updated drivers and pointed at driver for Sony Vaio 64bit. Checked machine: found installed a 32bit windows.
Tried Catalyst Mobility Center 32bit, hardware issue report. Contacted amd support, no luck in getting a new driver, but pointing at Acer.
Internet search learned ha the hardware compability message basicly is AMD stating, we are only dealing with your manufacturer for this model not you.
Contacted Acer again: Pointed to previous resolution and that it's a 32bit installed. This model is only fitted with a 64bit.
Conclusion: The repair shop changed the windows OS from 64 to 32 bit on HD installment.
No resolve, situation continued, stopped SettlersVII, crashed after few hrs on Anno1404, crashed after 30 minutes on CivilizationV. Larger maps gave direct problem. Reduced Excellsheets to about 3gb and they worked from then.

Time progresses and I get the feeling its more a memory issue as the problems occure with a result as if I was on a machine with to low spec's for the programm itself.
Weekend 6-7 january 2013. Constant crashes. No higher game will run for more than 3 minutes without crashing, mostly all shut down without any warnings or reports
Eventlog mentions nothing but an unexpected shutdown on bsod. Leaving laptop turned off for 12 hrs didn't make a difference though most of the time before it run the games for a longer period after the nighttime turnoff than when already running for several hours. Small games like internet puzzle games, bubble shooters and the cardgames work fine. Movies no problem whatshowever. Skype video chat works perfect, no hesitation, no distortions. Only the graphic demanding games shut down.

8jan2013 Got windows 7 64bit. Windows Clean Install
Get drivers acer site incl. radeon 8.783.2.0
Install Programs: AVG 2013 Antivirus free, Office 2007, Chrome browser, settlersVII gold, Anno1404 + Venice exp., Civ 5, ftp Starwars,The Old republic. All games bsod. after few minutes of play.
Eventlogmanager refers to dumpfiles. Can't read dmp files.
Got windbg as advised for reading dumpfiles on ms site. Installed the .net framework 4 as needed. Keeps saying symbols are missing. Readup told needed the "checked" symbols. Installed all 3 checked symbol files on Microsoft. Still warnings of missing kernal symbols ergo unreadable minidumpfiles.
Catalyst Mobility Center 64bit download: Hardware compability issues.
Find page download Catalyst Software Suite version: 12.1. CSS updates the driver to 8.982.0 driver. No difference.
Run every diagnostic programm on windows, no faults detected. Performance test gives score out of 7.9 of
Phenom = 6.9
memory = 6.9
radeon = 6.7
graphic mem = 6.7
hd = 5.9
Install hw monitor, check temp's. temp's go from 42-50 rest to 65 Celcius average.
Coolers work fine. External laptopcooler MS cleaned. No difference.
Internet Search: Found as possible cause powersupply. Since the laptop is on a permanent socket supply, removed the battery all together. No difference.
Eventlogger for civ mostly due to appcrash c5, atiumdag.dll. Internet search: atiumdag.dll part of directX. Checked DirectX on performance infopage, find DirectX-10 installed. Install DirectX11 again. No difference.
Install driver verifier to stress dll's and cause bsod's on it. ( ) No bsod's while running but pc freeze ups after about 5 minutes of play. Release by pressing offswitch.
Eventmanager: Freeze up's don't appear, only the offswitch procedure displays as "unexpected shutdown on kernal".
Disable the driver verifier after 24 hrs to see if the verifier turned bsod's in freezeups or the newly installed DirectX11 made all the difference. Test different games for several times. Result: Games run for about 10-15 minutes then freeze or bsod. Eventmanager constants blaims different dll.
But with mostly appcrash c5/atiumdag.dll. Check system32, no atiumdag.dll. copy atiumdag.dll from windows.old/system32 (32bitversion windows7)to windows/system32 (windows7 64bitversion). No difference.
Search up on Appcrash c5, Access denied status. Solution found, change bios settings. Not comfortable with messing with bios. So tossed aside.
Eventmanager: See conflicts between windows.old folder and newly installed. Delete the windows.old folder all together. No difference
Discover many CCC.exe critical errors in Eventmanager attached to few of the mentioned bsod's. Disable ccc startups in msconfig.

Suspect an error in pipeline BIOS-Radeon-Memory. Yet Radeon updated, Memory usage only about 60-70% with no faults. So time to see for Bios updates. Check Acer site for BIOS updates. See BIOS 1.5 with specific mentioning of Radeon vbios update. Check Bios version installed, find 1.8. Contact Acer to see if this is a downgrade to 1.5 or an specific vbios update which could be a resolution. Acer states Not to go to 1.5 as the vbios is also upgraded in the 1.8. But they suspect a fawlty radeon or motherboard and wants it in for repair. Yet my trust in acer tech service on repairs is non-existing based on earlier repairs on other machines which never resulted in a positive solution but mostly in machines working worse than before and with no resolve to the issue it wend in for.
Check internet. Overall mentioning: fawlty graphic cards go hand in hand with some kind of display issues at any point. No display issues here. Sharp, fine, beautifull upto sudden freeze and/or BSOD. 2x had a scrambled screen on freezeup, consisting of short horizontal lines of different colors forming closed lines over the complete screen. Yet since the problems are already there for more than 9 months and the last week it happened only 2x in the many many freezups and bsod's it seems not related but more a fluge in a sudden halt with moving in the 3d envirement of StarWars The Old Republic.
Check internet again on fawlty graphic cards: should give a problem at random in different situations. Not here, high graphic games specific. Not with other high graphics like movies nor with other programs, nor with normal operations.
Check internet on fawlty motherboard: Fawlty motherboard results in mostly bsod's with beeping sounds and occure random, not just on high graphic games. Further mostly there is fawlting hardware drivers which will occure. Also not the case. Everything works fine until it doesn't.

See complaints of new drivers heating up the laptop. Run hwmonitor again and see indeed a raise in temp. New driver raised temp with average of 5 degrees. Core temp runs up to 75degrees and radeon to 71. Place All games in lowest settings. Temperature goes down yet games keep crashing and sometimes so fast the temp. isn't even raised to it's max on the game. i.e. 45 degrees radeon, 52 cores, 51 acer upto 65 radeon, 72 cores, 68 acer. Conclusion not a temp. issue.

Different tech forums also replied that if there is no display disfiguration at any time its doubtfull the radeon is the cause.

Simple deduction on my side:
The 32bit OS installed with the HD clashed with the 64bit components. It improved a bit when the 64bit Windows was installed.
I get the feeling that the HD is at the base of the problems. When refered to for virtual mem/cache on graphical high demand it gives problems on returning the data and probably causes memory issues on it or the memory of the Radeon isn't adressed right.

Contacted AMD with everything above, included screenshot of gamecrash and taskmanager monitoring on the side. dxdiag and the for me unreadable minidumpfiles.
Answer back:
"Laptops are 100% OEM hardware and software so generally there is not much we can do from our end in terms of offering help. The most I could do would be to instruct clean driver removal and reinstallation and then beyond that an OS reinstall. You have already done both of those steps multiple times and the issues persist. I would have to imagine there is indeed a hardware issue with something in the machine at this point nothing else would make sense considering the multiple OS formats. We do not have any type of diagnostic software from our end unfortunately.**** "
When I ask if they at least could tell me where to find the missing Kernal Symbols to read the dumpfiles I got this:
"Unfortunately I do not know that, our knowledge level here is not quite at the depth of interpreting error logs and dump files etc. Try registering at , it may take some time but someone on there may be able to answer that for you."
W.a.w. Some Customer Support Operator with no knowledge whatshowever replies with the basic solutions and nobody there took an indept look. The link is a deadlink. So ladida. Thnx for nothing AMD

Now I'm stuck. Nothing fits the bill. The problems only occure on high graphical games who should be well within the spec's of this machine. Basicly I should be able to play them on high and not on lowest settings. Yet they crash, constantly. Sometimes it goes well for an hour sometimes you can't even get pass by the login screen. Sometimes it crashes when it's on pauze because I need to do something.

Anyone a suggestion on HOW to zoom in further on what's troubling this machine because I'm at the end of my limited knowledge and I don't have the money resources to start changing hardware on a suspicion hoping it will turn out right.

ok time for the second wall of text.

Wow, that is a lot to sift through....ATIUMDAG.DLL, is not part of DirectX, it is part of the AMD unified driver, that talks to dirextX. ATI is the manufacturer of the video chip, and was purchased by AMD. Now I see you have Magiciso, installed, do you also use tools like Daemontools and the like? If so, have you tried uninstalling that stuff, and running the games without the tools?

You can try AMD's verification tool Here to see if you can use the generic mobility drivers from AMD. If not, you can look at modified drivers like here

You may also want to see if the AMD chipset drivers you are using from ACER are the latest (doubtful). If not, see if the Generic AMD chipset drivers will work for you.

Magic Iso was just installed to install a game. It doesn't run during any operations.
yeah CCC didnt want to work but the suite updated the driver. With acer drivers it was 8.732 and CSS of dec 2012 upgraded it to 8.982

And again sorry for the enormous wall of text.
But I'm trying to zoom in on what the problem is for some time now.

in the system BIOS are there any memory voltage settings?

Check the memory in the laptop (physically make and model) and ensure the rated voltage is what its set to in the BIOS.

Also try some graphics benchmarking software, there is plenty around, free and non-free

There is also a Linux live CD for benchmarking graphics.

These will stress test your graphics and PC.

Also uninstall Magic ISO, its caused me issues in the past.

Ok, this is the only mentiong of hz. in bios

Bios:
cpu-speed 2.10 ghz

I hope this is what was intended.

Then second one was a bit harder, couldn't find any reference to voltage anywhere. Internet search found advise to use hwinfo32. Downloaded it, run it. But I find it hard to interpert. So herewith the shown results.

The graphic benchmark. Most advised was novabench. Herewith the results.

Downloaded also the pts-desktop-live. It came as an iso. Uploaded it in the magicdisc but can't find any .exe nor autorun to launch it.

Ok, a week further down the road and did some digging into the last.

I really can't find any section with rated memory. There is only little in the bios visible. The last time I looked at a bios whas about 10 years ago and it seems that at that time there was a lot more stuff in it than Im seeing now. Maybe it just put in subsections you can make visible by changing settings or whatever but I'm really uncomfortable with messing with the bios because I'm the tourist without speaking the local language. *grins

But my search to find rated memory settings in the bios did provided me with the inside why you asked those settings. Rasing the voltage can give more stability but will damage the cpu faster. Tough choice since this machine needs to go for 2 more years before it can be replaced and with my high usage on which every year counts for 3 it's not recommendable to shorten it's lifespawn.

Also it might patch the problem, but that's also doubtfull since there is a definite clash inside. One part is malfunctioning or clashing with other components. I rather go into finding the malfunctioning part and replace it than overclocking and hoping it will turn out right.

The graphic benchmark of novabench doesn't give much clearity to me. I did it again and again and values seem to shift slightly without anything changed. It seems to be the normal thing for this tool. Taking the average I compared it to others at it has that option. Machines in my scorelist are mostly about the same strength and speed as mine.

The odd thing remains is that at some days it will run stable for hours on any game. And at some days it won't run for longer than 5 minutes on any game. That's what keeps baffling me and used to baffle my son who had it before me. The only thing I definitely could rule out. OS as there were 2 different versions. Temperature as by monitoring conclusion and powersupply, as the battery is removed and its on socket.

So it's still the same. When it runs, everything functions as it supposed to be. Untill it suddenly shuts down with no distinctive errormessage on which you can zoom in on the part failing.

I hope my forgetting to put in a subject isn't keeping people to see this. Otherwise since some time has past already I have to wonder if it's possible to zoom in on the problem or at least exclude some of the possibilities causing it.

Honestly from sifting and going through your problem it sounds like you need a tech and not a forum.

And maybe one of the members here can help you but you are way beyond forum help. I mean you want us to just spit out hypotheticals without having the hardware in front of us to test?

It seems like you have 3 options.

1. Keep searching the web and hopefully figure out what you need to do to fix this.
2. Find a tech and pay them to fix it.
3. Get a new laptop.

I mean its a bit unreasonable to put up the info you did and expect one of us to read it, interpret it, and try and come to a conclusion. This could take hours on any of our end.

Darryn,

mate I think you took this the wrong way.
I don't expect any solution. To much can cause this.
I know many come to forums and expect a definite solution that will fix it all.
And I understand you put me on that pile.

The only way to go about pc problems is by elimination. Knowing what it's definitely not, leaves inventually what is.
Well I've extended the reach of my knowledge. Doesn't mean that's the end of all possible.
There are diagnostics and tools out there I'm not even aware off.
There can be info in the dxdiag or whatever I can't even interpret as such.
There can be someone who conquered a simular situation or excluded something on this problem without posting any solution.

Ofcourse I check first on forums with people I know their knowledge goes far beyond mine.
Doesn't mean there is an answer, but what is out there is an extended knowledgebase.
The question posed was different. Not, what is wrong, but how can I zoom in further on what is wrong.

If it means that a technician needs to look at the inside. Ok, that's a fair answer.
I know now there is little more to learn from testing, stressing and diagnostics and I extended all that could be done, not only that I know off.

I'm sorry you felt offended, yet I do think I was in the purpose of a forum to post this as done.

No hard feelings, mate.
Thnx all for the time invested.
Know it's appreciated.

>>>
Internet Search: Found as possible cause powersupply. Since the laptop is on a permanent socket supply, removed the battery all together. No difference. <<<

The bewildering array of symptoms you report are not inconsistent with a power supply that's in the process of dying, but hasn't quite given up its magic smoke. ... and dozens of other things that software can't diagnose, as has been noted.

If it were a desktop, you could eliminate the power supply as a possibility by just replacing it; they're too cheap to bother fixing.

Laptops are not that simple, and the parts are not that cheap.

If you're not willing to invest a couple hundred bucks of tech time to find the problem, then you should just throw the damn thing away.
