I've got an hp 500 celeron (64 ram)using a linksys 10/100 card and running windows 98....this particular user has a problems with it hesitating then it sends his data ...it's used for a telnet session to our UNIX box....i have problems with another hp machine of similar stats shutting down....we changed to an 3com etherlink III series card and it helped that issue.....i have never had him complain about that hesitating issue...then again...he doesn't use his computer a whole lot

i just reran the cable to good cable...it only goes about 20 feet from the switch..and is as far away as i can keep it from florescent lights etc..

i've heard that the 3com etherlinkIII series seem to work better with less conflicts...but beings as they are more expensive...the the cheap card works...that what i usually buy.

anybody got any ideas of what i can check or change...

Thanx

I've run across the problem w95 and lantastic. Hesitation was as much as 45 minutes. Would start a print job or a file transfer from 95 to another machine, create the resources on the destination and hang there, then at end of the hesitation start the data dump to completion. Problem was basic incompatibilities between ethernet cards. Solution was to get compatible cards. So now I do my best to use the same mfgr. cards within the network.
Network diagnostics may be of some use in tracking the problem. [sig]<p>Ed Fair<br><a href=mailto: efair@atlnet.com> efair@atlnet.com</a><br><a href= > </a><br>Any advice I give is my best judgement based on my interpretation of the facts you supply. <br>

this machine currently has the same linksys card ad about 3/4 of the machines on this local network....the rest are typically made in china generic cards...the pause is only like......2 to 5 seconds....he'll be typing....the screen won't....then it will catch up some more.....then some more....kindof like that...

Yeah! Kind of like that. The 45 minute was the failure that let me find out what was going on. Had 6 machine with artisoft cards, 2 with generics. 1 generic would hesitate, the second would hang anywhere from 1 to 45 seconds. Was fighting the hesitation with no progress. Decided to troubleshoot the more solid problem since I could monitor the files/print being transferred. This was new hardware, new 95B, and some lantastic 7.0 problems all stirred into the pot so I was beating my head againt the wall. New artisoft cards resolved both machines and the network hasn't blinked in two years ,maybe three.
