Heres a weird problem with an DID number on a PRI

I have a Avaya Definity system that has a verizon PRI connected to it with many DID numbers riding the PRI. The DNIS is the last 4 digits of the DID number(ex 1724). I have a modem line that when called internally(ext 1724) answers ok. But when you dial the DID number from external source, the call is Ring NO ANSWER......The internal number is the same as the DNIS that is sent for external calls......I am able to connect an analog phone where the modem is and recieve AND answer the inbound calls fine whether it was an internal or external call.....Have change the port from 1 card to another and from 1 cabinet to another....I had to eventually put a copper trunk that we had as a spare so that the modem is able to recieve calls externally. Can anybody explain what the hell is happening and how to fix it......i would normally post in the Avaya section but i dont think it has anything to do with the PBX.

Any help is appreciated
Brian

If your phone in the back of the modem rings when the call comes in over the PRI, then it's illogical that the modem won't answer. If you call it directly from within the system, the modem answers, so it can't be something as simple as a low ring voltage on the station card. This will be either fun when the answer is found, or very weird.

I don't know anyting aboyut Definity, but what happens when you route the number to another modemon the system that you know works, does it answer?

This could be a programming issue, but I'm not even a novice on the Definity. Try posting this question over in the Definity forum. [smile]

Have you verified that your phone jack is plugged into the jack labeled LINE or WALL on the modem and not the one labeled PHONE, EXT, or with a phone icon? I've done this one before on accident.

I assume your modem has been told to answer the phone?

As another said, have you plugged a standard phone into the other modem jack to see if it rings? If it does, and the modem is set to answer, swap out the modem.

You can run a terminal program like Procomm or something that is configured for the modem and offline. If you do this and call the modem does it say RING... RING... on the screen?

How many rings is your modem set to answer on, if answering is enabled?

Have you tried cranking up the volume setting on the modem so you can hear if the rings are coming in?

These are just a few suggestions in a different direction from where you are focussed right now.

i am able to replace the modem with a phone and the phone does ring both when called internally and also externally. I am able to assign the DID number to another modem and the cal is asnwered just fine both ways also. We have had to put a copper trunk directly connected to the jack so that the modem an be used for its intended purpose and the call is nswered just fine......that is why i posted here in the General Telephony area instead of the Avaya forum cause i dont think it is a problem with the PBX programming.

I agree with Touchtonetommy

I bet the ring cadence is different for outside vs inside calls.

Is this correct?

If so, it MAY be easiest just to use a different modem!

Good luck.

ISDN

Have tried to replace the modem and the ring cadence is NOT different for the 2 types of inbound calls....I was able to cross connect a copper trunk and it answers fine with no changes

What is the make and model of the modem?

Does it have LEDs on the front? If so, there should be one marked AA (autoanswer), does it follow the ringing cadence on incoming calls? If so, the modem is receiving the ringing current.

At this point I would persue issues with the modem. Have you monitored the T & R of the station with the modem (VOM or buttset) for anything unusual?

Avaya 8710 Servers- CPN NAME on Outbound Calls:

Hello-
Hoping someone can assist. Recently one of my techs made a change on the trunk group form to enable send name and send number. The tech also went into public networking to type in a CPN number..xxx-xxx.xxxx, and then typed in another command to reflect the name that would be used for the CPN-Name to send out on ISDN trunks on outbound calls. My tech cannot remember the command that he typed when he changed the CPN name to display on the ISDN trunk when it made outbound calls. It works, but now I need to change it and no-body, including Avaya remembers the command to change the outgoing name on an ISDN trunk. This change I do know does not exist on the trunk group ...Any thoughts?

It's possible that the DID has been redirected to another extension for that particular DID. Are you familiar with the programming so you can check this. If not let me know. I'll need to know what version of definity you have.

foneboy,

yes i am familiar with the programming of the pbx......it is definitely not programmed to another ext as the DID is an ext all to itself and is the DNIS that we recieve for the DID number. It is definitely something with the modem....trouble has been cleared and we just extended a copper trunk to the jack

Try looking at Modem set up. Look up AT commands and set it to auto answer after 2 rings.

Just Google AT commands Auto Answer or some thing similar.
