What if Google made an operating system? Think about how great and fast their search engines and map systems are, imagine what they could do with an OS. I think they could really give Microsoft a run for their money if they tried.

Search engines and maps are one thing, operating systems are another! Windows is a good operating system but more competition would be nice.

Carlsberg don't run I.T departments, but if they did they'd probably be more fun.

Well, Glenn9999, it looks just like any other Member Registration form to me. [wink]

You may already know this, but you can go to bugmenot.com, type in the website name (mercurynews.com) and it will provide a functional username and password that doesn't have any real information tied to it.

As already said, there is a big difference between search engines and operating systems. There is also a big difference between office applications and operating
systems.

For all practical purposes, Google already has its own operating system, but is not one applicable to an individual PC. Google has built a cluster and is many ways is re-centralizing the world of computing. Google has a huge custom built cluster computer, massively parallel with thousands of processors, and a huge centralized database. The services being provided include searching, price comparions, gmail, and a host of others. They have a tremendous database of adverters and consumer searching and spending habits.

Do we really Google to provide your basic OS as well? Personally, the last thing I would want is my primary OS to essentially be a glorified Google client. Please don't get me wrong, I'm not a big fan of MS either, but if you want to talk about a 'big brother', think about how far Google's tenacles already extend.

==> What if Google made an operating system?
Be careful what you wish for.

Good Luck

I second Cajun. Imagine the joy of targeted Advertising on your desktop !
You open up "Notepad" and see an advert for McDonalds because it's near lunchtime, or Viagra, beaue it's Friday night and your on your pc whilst the other half if watching and episode of Love Island on her laptop!
Sorry to spoil the fun,but Google are in it now for the money as much as MS. If it wasn't why so many ad's, why float on the stockmarket?
Would you want an ad driven OS?

If the ads were the same ads that they use on websites, it wouldn't bother me that much. They're small, and unindimidating. No flashing lights, no little games, just simple text ads.

Sure, no ads would be preferable, but if Google was going to do an ad-driven OS, it wouldn't be that bad.

You should look at the Amiga OS or BEOS to see what could be done OS wise. All they needed were better marketing and much better lawyers :)

Google's currently in hot water with their plan to index and make available online printed works. Noble thought and all, but its their "Damn acquiring copyright approval - full speed ahead!" stance that has publishers looking to slam the brakes on them.

Let's see, there's also Desktop Search. I could just imagine a GOS (Google OS?) linking Desktop Search back into their public online data. See heavy-handed tactics above.

Google desktop is v handy though - is almost beginning to make my XP machine feel a little more like my favourite Mac!

If this is true, it sounds pretty interesting.

Rumors are that Google is developing a consumer-grade "Google Box" which will be your internet & media gateway.
