Helpin Upgrading IOS / Cisco ROuters 25xx

Hello all & Greetings.

I have a couple of Cisco 2500's with IOS 12.0 or earlier. Each of them has 16 MB DRAM / 16 MB Flash. ROM Sys Bootstrap v 11.0(10c).
I am successfully copying the exisiting router IOS flash to tftp.
However, when I try to copy tftp flash (with IOS 12.3), I get an error message: Flash is read only. So, now, how do I make my flash memory read/write. Detailed steps will be very helpful and much appreciated!

By the way, I am using SolarWinds tftp server; my laptop which has the tftp server is using the ip addr: 192.168.1.x. The router has e0 ip addr: 192.168.1.x /24 and I have a cat5 cable connected to the router AUI port.
