Why do i get this error?
# chown amfort.mail aa
chown: changing ownership of `aa': Read-only file system

One of those 'does exactly what it says on the tin' things? Try chmod on aa to make it writeable first, then do your chown. Following this, it's probably best to reinstate the original permissions in case they're there for a reason. HTH.

I believe the error is stating you are on a read only filesystem (like a cd-rom). Is the filesystem you're on mounted read only or is it mounted read write? In what directory is aa located?

Also, please don't post with subject lines like "need help" or "total newbie". A much better subject line for this would've been "chown help" or "read-only filesystem".

out of curiosity, what worked? I know I got a star, but wasn't it ken's suggestion that you used?

I used your suggestion of remounting the files system.
