okay, here is the problem. I have ADSL and for some reason it is fast and up to speed for my games 10% of the time. I will get good pings for about 1 or 2 days in a row and then i will get horrible ones for the rest of the month. I tried the same comp same everything with a 56k and I got a better connection. Could my computer be doing something to slow down my DSL?

I just did a speed test and it turned out funny. My upload speed is 846 kbs and my download speed is 184 kbs. I don't know if that will make a difference, but it also slows down my Internet actions. Although it says it is this fast it doesn't run that fast. Is something maybe wrong with my tower?

I would first check with your ISP, have them test the line. Those speeds sound backwards, usually the higher speed is your down and the slower your up... Matt Wray

Yes that sounds backwards. what speed should you have? “Reserve your right to think, for even to think wrongly is better than not to think at all”

I have been having this same problem for over two weeks. Everything was fine for over a year, until Unable and USeless (cable and Wireless) did some 'maintenance' on the line and now the ADSL speeds are slow and backwards. 50k down and over 300 up (should be 700+/256). Does anyone have an idea of what would cause this. C&W don't seem to have an answer, not yet anyway. The maintenance was done at the exchange, but they refuse to acknoledge that there is any problem there.
Thanks

I would run a trace route to rule out your isp....try going to your dos prompt and typing "tracert and hit enter....see what the results of the trace are...if you see ms values of over 100 in the first 10 hops or so...you may want to call your ISP, if the trace is between 15ms and 50ms or so..then your speed is fine...i'd bet its something on your pc,

you have a virus scan? that can do it...also...go to msconfig and check your startup menu...gots any nasty spyware in there thats trying to use your internet connection at the same time as you? i'd check that out too...

***note: if your up and download streams are truly backwards....demand your network be tested for your line...that sounds like a wiring issue at the Central Office...possible cross connect..... *ducks and hides* "don't shoot me i'm only the messenger!"

More likely they installed some metering module in a router or on the line to keep speeds under control, and screwed up the settings.
