A user that has a laptop at a remote site, started his PC today and go the response that his operating system was missing a file needed to run. He has his hard drive split into both an C: and D: drive. He loaded the OS back on his C: drive, now when he try's to access D: drive the laptop ask him "do you want to format this drive?"

The question here is, will this format erase all his data or format his drive to make it accessible?

format erases all data...
I think it will be best to try and repair the partition with some software like Partition Magic. With some luck you can salvage the partition, no garantees tough.

If your real lucky it might just be a loose connection or bad piece of wiring.
