I'm getting an ipod in the near future and i was wondering if i could use the downloading service i have (bearshare) instead of Itunes. I dont have to pay for the music on bearshare and i dont want to have to pay for music that i can get free through bearshare. please help.

It would help a lot if you would tell us what host operating system you're using.

In any case, you can use itunes to upload and download free music, not just songs you bought from Apple.

Indeed, just note that certain file types will not work on an ipod (or in itunes) - WMA, OGG - and will need converting to a recognised format (see versiontracker.com for software to do this if required). As you might expect, the quality of the music can suffer if you convert from one lossy format to another (e.g. WMA > mp3).

If you have a huge collection of OGG or WMA files, you might prefer to acquire a music player that supports such - I understand the iRiver series are pretty well-regarded for breadth of file type support.
