I've had this problem since I've been using 95. I've upgraded to 98.. 98 se and now ME.. and i still have this problem.

Everything seems to be working fine but on a given day.. I would turn on my computer and just as the task bar in windows were to appear, I would get this window with "EXPLORER" as the title and a msg saying...

"/!\ Explorer has caused an error in <unkown>.
Explorer will now close.
If you continue to experience problems, try restarting ur computer."

So i click ok but then nothing loads up and i'm stuck with my wallpaper with no taskbar .. system try.. i just see my wallpaper.

So then i use the "CTRL ALT DEL" to bring up the "CLOSE PROGRAM" window but instead of that poping up.. i get a windows saying my system is DANGEROUSLY low on resources and asks me to close a program such as norton antivirus.

I am so sure that it's not my computer because..
1. i made sure i had more than 2 gigs of free hd space..
2. i have 128 ram...

What i am forced to do is reinstall windows either ..
1. just installing it over the one i have on my HD
2. delete the windows directory and install

I've tried booting into safe mode but i still get the same msg. I've had this problem even after i've boughtn' a new computer so i'm guessing there's something wrong with the software. Please.. if anyone can tell me why this is happening please do.. i'm sick of reinstalling windows every so often. Thanks.

Did any of the software you load come from floppies? If so, did you scan the floppies with a virus scanner before using? If not, you could have a virus and some viruses will not allow your virus scanner to work properly.

It you didn't use floppies on any program installs, and you're sure you don't have a virus, how many icons are in your system tray when you startup? Everything in your startup uses resources of some degree.

When you actually get a boot with the taskbar showing, Click on start>Run>Type msconfig and click OK. Click on the Startup tab and see how many programs are loading everytime you startup. Start by taking all the checkmarks out to load clean. Reboot several times and see if the problem goes away. If it boots good everytime, then add one back at a time under msconfig/startup tab, and see which one is giving you the problem.

I hope this helps, but if it doesn't, I'm sure someone on here will have your answer!

I hope I never get too old or arrogant to learn something new!

There's a slight chance of a virus, but doubtful. Any time you get that most dire of warnings, "DANGEROUSLY low on resources", it's time for something else.
You could have 256 MEG of RAM, and still get this warning. It stems from the amount of FREE PHYSICAL RAM remaining after startup. When that gets low, and the swap file is getting used a lot, POOF, a nice windows warning.
Read my article here: to find out just what you can do about it.
It's particularily applicable to those who own an "Off the Shelf" system, such as Compaq, PB, HP, et al, that insist on loading every little (and big) piece of software on the system at startup.
Check the FAQ's in this forum, I think there's more there. Cheers,

I originally posted this msg up and I think the users that replied didn't really know what my level of computer literitacy was @. Let me clearify something first. My problem didn't start after i've installed something therefore meaning there was nothing added to my startup config or system try. My computer was working PERFECTLY fine along time and I haven't installed anything onto for two weeks. What I mean is that this couldn't have happened because something new was installed since the last time I installed something was so long ago.

i would try adjusting your swap file size, right click my computer and click performance tab. If in doubt get the Ball Pein Hammer out
