Hi everyone,
Sorry if this is a bit wordy
I'm a positive newbie to databases in general and unfortunately I have a bit of a task on my hands which I need advice on. I've been given the task of creating a cancer database for a research project, which will contain somewhere in the order of 200,000+ records if successful.
Currently I've combined SQL 2005 Express with MS Access as I don't really have the VB skills to build my own viewer. Data I have been given is delimited into separate fields barring one which is a densely texted pathology report.
I need somehow to be able to extract the relevant bits of information from this field and put them in other to be able to analyse the data.
Here is an example of a pathology report:
Skin, left calf.
A skin ellipse 18 x 9 x 3 mm with a central raised crusted lesion 7 x 5 mm.
(3nr) JSHP
Sections show a moderately differentiated squamous cell carcinoma, which
has extended to the mid dermis, with mild fibrosis and a minimal chronic
inflammatory infiltrate. There is no demonstrable neural or perineural
tumour invasion. Mild solar degeneration of dermal collagen is present.
The lines of excision are clear of the tumour.
From this I need to enter information about:
Excision margin complete/incomplete
Presence of lymphovascular invasion Yes/No (just a fancy name for the bit on "no demonstrable neural or perineural tumour invasion"
Level of differentiation
Dagnosis
The text, even though it is free hand is remarkably consistent. I was hoping someone could tell if it is possible to write code to bring this data in, as I think it is unfeasible to attempt to manually enter it in the time frame I have.
Please if anyone can advise me on this, it'd be much appreciated. I've pretty much been cut loose to manage this one on my own.
Kind regards,
