Help with Up/Down Transfer Rate 1

I've got this wireless card in my laptop and all is good. Excellent connection etc. but when I go online the Mbps drops from 11 to 5.5 to 2 to 1 then my internet connection terminates - I can't figure out how to lock the transfer rate so it will not drop below say 2 or 5.5 Mbps.

XP home edition (don't laugh)
Linksys wireless network card with latest firmware etc.
Linksys Wireless-G router 2.5 gig.

right-click the tray icon for the network, properties, right-click the wireless connection, properties.
Now hit Configure, Advanced, and look at the list. You can change from Auto to a fixed rate.
