help with SQL syntax/ODBC (date format)

what is the expected date format in the where clause... i.e. where PaymentDate = '1/1/1900'?

and on a related note... does anyone know the best way to join these tables... AR1_CustomerMaster -> ARN_InvoiceHistoryHeader -> ARO_InvoiceHistoryDetail ... or better yet can direct me to a source with documentation on SQL wit mas 90 odbc...
