Hello,

Im having some trouble when I add a new user to a site I get the following error

"The user or users have been added successfully, but there was an error in sending the e-mail message. The server may not be set up correctly to send e-mail. To verify that e-mail is configured correctly, contact your server administrator. "

The thing is, is that alerts and alert setup notification are setup and working correctly. How do these work but the new user function does not. Im incredibly confused. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Can you confirm the following:

1. Alerts work from the portal and from team sites
2. Search returns results in team sites and the portal

Thanks.

Hello,

Thanks for the response I have confirmed that search works as well as the alerts. The only issue is when we add a new user.

Actually, as it turns out I was misinformed. The alerts work. The search does not. Any ideas?

I'm not at work today so I'm going from memory but try the following:

Go to Sps central admin, check your mail server settings.

On the left you can then go to windows sharepoint services admin.
Check the default mail settings on that page, they should be the same.
Also on that page under Search there is a place where you can untick full text indexing. Untick it and apply it then retick it and apply it.

Also check the services on the server running WSS. Check all your sharepoint services and mssearch logon with the same userid you have setup the SQL db with (I maybe mistaken but I think most people use a Domain Admin Userid).

Also check your DNS setup, from your server try and ping your mail servers name if it doesnt reply try its FQDN, if that doesnt work try its IP address. If any of them dont work, dont use it as the mail server settings we just checked, or better yet fix your DNS settings.

Failing that, right click on the instance of SQL server your Sharepint DBs are running on. Go to properties then security. Change the db to logon as system and apply. Then change it back to the same userids your services logon as.

If your still not going try a reboot.

If you still dont go after a reboot have a look at the servers event logs and Sharepoints logs to see if there are any errors (probably should of done that at the start)

I should of asked, are you using Sharepoint Portal Server or just WSS? If SPS, is the serach not working just in WSS sites or both the portal and WSS sites?

Thanks for the ideas, unfortunetly they didnt work. We are using SPS and WSS. The thing I dont understand is why do the alerts work, but the new user notification doesnt? Im stumped
