Help with shared border nav bar pls - these [] annoying things

Hi - I put in a navigation bar in a shared border - it kinda looks like this:
[Home] [FAQ] [Contact me]
I keep trying to get these [ ] things off, but can only do it in a manually inserted link.
How do I get rid of them?

The only way I got rid of them was to select a theme and select "Buttons" intead of "text" on navigation bar properties.
