Hello all.

I am trying to ftp to download netcat from pcunix.com/pub/netcat. Well, I think my DNS is screwed up because when I try to ftp, telnet, or ping with names I get "Unknown host" or "no address associated with name".

I can ping and telnet to outside address using the 65.77.xx.xx fine so it is not a connectivity issue.

I found a post on here about creating a etc/resolv.conf file.

Here is what mine contains:

Domain detering.com
nameserver 151.164.1.1
nameserver 151.164.1.7
hostresorder local bind

my etc/hosts file is as follows

127.0.0.1 localhost
192.168.208.1 tdc2k001 <--- name of my local dns server
192.168.208.2 deterww detering deterww.UUCP.com
192.168.208.100 printserver
192.168.208.200 tdclinux

Am I missing something else? What else should I have in here?

thanks.

the other key would be routing.

run "netstat -nr " and see if you have a default route set to your gateway.

personally i would change it so that your local machines are looking to your local dns for primary resolution and then set up your dns to "forward" other requests to the 151 dns.

Ok netstat -nr gave me:

default 192.168.208.30 (which is my gateway)

still doesn't work!

I do have all my machines looking to my local dns for resolution and then it forwards it on to the outside name servers. This sco box is the only one not working.

Is there something I can change to get the sco box to get the dns from my local win2k server dns???

thanks.

hten your /etc/resolv.conf should have:

domain detering.com
hostresorder local bind /nis
nameserver 192.168.208.1

the /nis just tells sco not to try nis resolution

try nslookup and see what server it attaches to and then try and resolve a local address and a public one.

It is not doing anything, has been sitting for 2 minutes.

Finally came up...

*** Can't find server name for address 192.168.208.8: No response from server
*** Default servers are not available

I am not sure where it is getting 192.168.208.8 from???

It looks as if something maybe configured wrong!

thanks.

That did it!

Thanks a bunch I do appreciate it.

Apparently when I went in vi, I must have hit a wrong key and changed the 192.168.208.1 to .8 and that was the issue.

Once again thanks for all your help!
