help with placing AI. files into pagemaker!!!!

Hi there, I'm trying to place an illustrator file into pagemaker but every time I do it displays in preview mode (which is a grey box)....how do I change it back to regular mode?

HELP!!!!!!!

Save the AI graphic as an EPS.

What version of AI? PM doesn't handle AI files newer than about V7.
