Hi all, I'm having trouble opening up certain photoshop documents. I have Photoshop 6 and I believe the psd i am trying to open up is done in photoshop 8. The error i get is:

"Could not open file.psd because there is not enough memory (RAM)."

I know I have enough RAM (1 Gb) and I set the Photoshop RAM usage to 100%. Does anyone know what could be causing this error. It only happens to some psd files others made w/ Photoshop 8 open fine.

Thanks in advance.

Well for starters:

how big are the files that won't open compared to those that will open?

have you checked for virus' lately?

have you checked at with your specific error?

have you checked to see what your memory usage is at the time when the file won't load? Ctrl Alt Del > task manager > performance (on a PC, I don't know how to do this on a MAC)

Do you re-boot regularly?

Have you tried the .psd on another computer?

Also, are you running 6.0, or 6.01? The upgrade might help...

Thanks for the suggestions, but nothing seems to be doing the trick.

- I rebooted my machine and started up photoshop only, no luck.
- Scanned my machine for viruses
- Some of the files I can open are up to 50Mb+ and some I can't open are as small as 1-2Mb which leads me to believe it's not the size of the files.

I have Photoshop 6.0.1.

I'm thinking it might be an error created by the computers that made the psd files. But that is a shot in the dark.

Any further help is appreciated.

If you can, see if you can get the documents stored as a .tif...
You may be running into incompatability for .psd's from CS to 6.
You might also post this in the Adobe user to user forum boards. Some to the Adobe coders read those posts and may have a better answer.

drop the memory usage to 60% in the prefrences and try again.
