I recently dowloaded the evaluation version of Nortel's Optivity Switch Manager which includes Device Manager 5.5.3.

I have installed it on 3 different Windows 2000 machines and get the same results.

If I try to discover my network by keying in one of my switch stacks (Baystack 450-24T's) I get:

Unable to examine seed device's topology due to:
(a) invalid read community or
(b) no route.
Try Actions->Ping to test connectivity.

I am able to ping the stack, telnet into the stack and change the stack.

If I run Device Manager and try to open the stack I get a java.lang.NullPointerException Error.

My stack version is:

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Hello:
The firmware & software versions in your switch are outdated.
JDM 5.5.3 will not run on that code. JDM 5.3.0 will run;it may still be available from Nortel.
I would recommend upgrading your switch code4.0.16).

Rick,

Thank you for your reply. Will the entire stack have to be taken off line in order for the HW/SW upgrade? Or will Newer versions still talk to Older versions?

We are a 24x7 operation and downtime is very limited.

Thanks again for your help above.

Jeff

When you upgrade you get 2 files (usually one ends in 1 and one ends in 2)

you tftp the first file and the switch resets (90 seconds?)
then you tftp the second file and it resets again (4 minutes?)

so there is some downtime, but not much

if you have a stack of 450s, this upgrades them all
I tried to remain child-like, all I acheived was childish.

Where could I download the latest version of Nortel's Optivity Switch Manager?

Optivity Switch Manager (3.0 is current) is a commercial product you buy, while Java Device Manager is free download. (5.6.2 is current) They work well together.
