Help with MSN Messenger

O.K. I need some help here with Visual Basic and MSN Messenger. What I want to do is make a program that will catch all of the sent and recieved messages. Do I need to use a sniffer? Or can I just hook the messages as the come in and out? Could some help me here. I'm good with vb and o.k. with c++ but only in certain things. I have no idea where to go from here. Thank you.
