Hello tek-tips,

I am a new member here. I was stumbling through Google last night and found this forum with a lot of old information about Nortel telephone systems.
I am going to explain my story and situation, and I am hoping someone with old-school Nortel experience will be able to point me in the right direction...

I have a client in 2021 - who wanted me to hook up a Nortel Norstar telephone system, with a Nortel StarTalk Mini. Mind you, I haven't ever messed with an old school telephone system like this one before. Long story short, we did manage to get the Norstar telephone system running with 7 different phones, configured and ready to go! Our only dilemma is the StarTalk Mini. We followed the instructions of the StarTalk Mini user manual online. To our knowledge, it is hooked up 100% correct. We do our function 987 key to attempt to get to the voice mail, and it says inactive feature. I have read a fair bit on this forum that the StarTalk Mini is prone to failing early. So I am surprised it has made it this long.

My question is: Do you think the StarTalk Mini is dead, and if so what should I replace it with? I read that the CP100 is probably the way to go. But that post was from 2004 or something like that.
Can anyone help? Thank you so much in advance.

Feature 987 I believe is not available on the Mini.

F983 is for admin and the first feature you should try:
-"Inactive Feature" means the voice mail is not communication with the KSU
-"Log:" means the system is awaiting login credentials
-"Password" means the system is at the default stage and must be initialized (some parameters configured)

On the KSU you also have the heading "Maintenance/Port-DN status" to see if the KSU see's the Mini (Startalk)
Also on the KSU Feature **XFTEST can be used to remove any voice mail feature codes in case the system thinks there is 2 vmails on the system and has assigned your vm newer F codes, reboot the voice mail after this is done.

Startlak Mini uses a hard drive so if it's dead silent then it may have failed.

The Mini is ancient as goes Norstar voicemails. It uses a laptop SCSI drive, which are essentially impossible to find anymore. A CallPilot might be the way to go, depending on the type of Norstar system and its software level. Need more info to make a recommendation.

As Curly mentioned F987 does not exist on the Mini. To add to obsolescence of the Mini, it is not Y2K compatible. The Mini does not get it's clock (voice mail time stamp) from the KSU like other voice mails and can't go past Dec 31, 1999. Clock is set with Feature code 984.
