Hi,

I'm trying to install Cisco vpn client 4.6 on my home PC to connect into the office. The Windows installer showed me an error message 28000: "before installing the Cisco Systems VPN Client 4.6.01.0019, you must uninstall the previous version of Cisco System VPN Client, using the Add/Remove Program Files option in the Control Panel. Then restart your system". My problem is that in the Add/Remove list, there is no VPN (I did install a cisco vpn client last year and later *deleted* it from my pc; maybe that's why the add/remove does not see it). I tried to "override" or "enforce" the installation by

TheSetUp.exe REINSTALL=ALL REINSTALLMODE=vamus

but still, Error 28000 popps up again. What else can I try?

your comments are appreciated,

When you uninstalled the previous client, did you go through the Add/Remove programs? Does it still show up in the Start-->All Programs? If it is there, then there should be an option to uninstall. If you did Add/Remove Programs, then do a regedit and ctrl-f and search for cisco (if this is the only cisco thing installed on the computer), and delete all registry keys.

thanks burtsbees.

no, when I uninstalled the old client I didn't go through the Add/Remove program, I just deleted the directory. and I guess that's the problem.

and no, Start-->All Program shows no vpn (cisco).

I did have regedit'ed and deleted all cisco keys.

after all this the 28000 error still shows and windows installer makes no further progress and stops there.

What about in Program Files? Also, try reinstalling the same version again, and if it installs, the do the Add/Remove Programs.

hmmm...still not work, it is not in Program File and I no longer have the previous version of vpn client. I wonder how the installer discovered that there is a previouse installation? that piece of information must have been stored somewhere. If so maybe I could fool the installer by removing that piece of information.

I suggested this in my last post. This is how the system detected the Cisco client. You can try a registry cleaner, which would help too.
