I hope you all had a Merry Christmas and are enjoying the holiday season.

I am but it is marred by my router misbehaving.

My computer is a Dell Latitude D600 laptop running Win2kSP4. The router is a Gigafast WF719-CAPR 4 port wireless router with fixed antenna. My ISP is Shaw Cable in western Canada.

My TV reception works so I ‘know’ that it is not a Shaw problem, and when I plug the internet cable directly into the laptop, I have internet connection and can access web pages, hence my ability to connect to Tek-Tips. I should be able to put the router into my ‘circuit’ and have everything run normally, assuming (bad word I know) the router is configured correctly.

I have reset the router (button on back for 10 seconds) and configured it according to its internal instructions and checked these against the instructions in the manual. All ok so far. HOWEVER, when I insert the router between the modem and computer, I run into my challenge: packets are being sent and received, but on disproportionate basis – very few received. The double-monitor icon on the system tray shows two-way traffic, BUT when I try to open a browser, “page cannot be displayed” is all I get. The router has firewall capabilities, but I have not enabled them.

There were no problems until I did a general cleaning of my hard drive recently, but I’ll be jiggered if I can understand how that would affect my internet access. I need the router for people who rent from me, otherwise I wouldn’t bother. They aren’t in till next Monday, so I have a few days.

Any thoughts?

Ok so you are on line it looks like, is it just your home page not displaying? When you have it hooked up try to ping yahoo.com to see if you get any reply's. If you ge now reply's then try a public IP if no reply's then you have no connection. Also did you set up any encryption to keep people from accessing your wireless?

Thank you for your reply.

I was then and am now online 'cos my router isn't involved. When the router is, I can get no web pages at all, just the double monitor icons flashing and packet numbers increasing. For IE, I use blank (as my home page) 'cos I don't go to the same site each time I logon. For Firefox I use their start page 'cos it's simple . From IE blank I can get nothing; for Firefox, not even the start page shows.

I haven't tried pinging yet - good idea. I'll try and report back...and no there is no encryption.

If you can ping a public IP but not a web address then your getting out but DNS isn't working corectly.

Shaw usually sets the modems to only allow one dynamic IP address and the modem remembers the last machine it gave an IP to.
To add a router connect the router to the modem and then take the modem off power for about 30 seconds. When you plug it back in again wait for a solid Online light.
Then take the router off power for 5 or 10 seconds and then power it up and restart the computer (or release and renew the IP address [repair]).

You should then be able to surf.
