We’re attempting to migrate an Exch 5.5 server that is part of an AD domain to Exch 2003. The initial Active Directory migration (performed a year ago) left us with a bunch of contacts in the default “users” container and those contacts have the Exchange Attributes (msExchADCGlobalNames) associated with them instead of the actual user accounts so the migration fails to move mailboxes from Exch 5.5 to Exch 2003. We found a rollback procedure in the knowledgebase and have rolled back but now we are stuck.
If we remove the exchange attributes from the contacts and delete them it deletes the user’s mailbox on the Exch 5.5 server. We’ve tried to clean up these contacts both with the ADC on and with it off and in either case we cannot move the mailboxes from the old server to the new.
I’ve considered a new Exch 2003 server the does not join the existing 5.5 domain but I’m afraid it’s going to associate itself with the contacts as well. We’ve been toying with solutions in our test environment for weeks and have no clue where to turn.
Please help.
