Help with extracting styles

I need a little guidance on how best to tackle a pretty large challenge. I am currently working on a book in InDesign CS that is going to have an index, glossary, and 4 other appendices. We are styling all of the applicable index/glossary/etc. words with characters styles in the hope of extracting the text out and creating the appropriate index. What is the best way to do this using character styles? Are Applescript or XML options?
