Help with erasing shapes

Help!!! I'm trying to erase part of an oval (actually, an ellipse with stroke set to 4 and advanced blending set to 0%). When I turn it to a raterized layer, the oval "dodges" the eraser tool. I want it to be "erased"! What am I doing wrong?

There's always a better way. The fun is trying to find it!
